April 3rd meeting update

What a great meeting.... Parents please remind your Daisies to water their Daisies regularly. Once you have your flowers a couple of inches ( and the weather gets above the frost levels) help your Daisy transplant their flowers into a garden bed. The packaging popcorn could also be planted to help with the drainage....we are all about the GO GREEN message here. Thanks to the Raffensperger /Schill Family for donating the packing peanuts.

And let us offer our sincerest apologies if for the next week you hear nothing more than " Oh I wish I were a little Mosquito"  Its a great camp song and we are going to continue to teach the girls more camp favorites that we can sing around the camp fire. So just think only 2 more weeks before you hear a different song....  :)

Notices: 2 notes went home with your Daisy
1. Bake sale information: You must email me first if you and your Daisy are going to paricipate because Mrs. Levine will just think it is a general donation otherwise.  I will give her a list and she will mark off your name when you deliver your goodies.
2. Camp permission slips: ( On the reverse side of the Bake sale information (GO GREEN)
These forms are due to me by the 17th so that we can make all the traveling arrangements and finalize the numbers for meal planning and activities.  Please remember that we are unable to accomodate siblings at this time. There will be a zoo trip over the summer that all families members will be welcomed to attend.

Looking to the future:
Next meeing: Lt. Basak from the NRFD will come by to speak to the girls about the importance of making a Home Fire Safety plan and give us a date for our a visit to the NRFD and the HOME SAFETY MOBILE Display.  Permission slips will go out.

I know for many of our Daisy Families, this is their Easter Holiday time.  We wish you well and have a safe and Happy Easter.

Yours In Scouting,
Wendy Winkler

1ST GRADE DAISIES WHO ARE BRIDGING ONLY

I have only received permission for 3 girls to bridge.

If you have not done so please get that in ASAP.

Please respond to this email with a  YES WE ARE BRIDGING in the subject line so I can give Phyllis a heads up about how many girls to expect.  They are doing a Science experiment badge which are girls will earn as well. (part of the requirement to bridge)

Once I know how many girls are participating I can plan activities accordingly to make sure that our girls get the most out of this experience.  Please remember to also include a $8 to troop 41184 for expenses. If you are unable to pay the fee, please just submit the form.  We don’t want any girls to miss out on this experience.

I am really looking forward to participating in this process with our girls. Hope they all can participate.

Wendy

PS scroll down to receive the sign up form again if you have misplaced it.

Becoming a Brownie School year 2009-2010 Current 1 st Grade girls only. Kindergarten girls will remain a daisy 1 more year. I know you are saying…. “ What is she thinking we aren’ t even through with Daisies ” Well like all things in Scouting, we must plan ahead. Those girls who feel they would like to go further into Brownies next year may participate in a special Bridge badge. It actually is quite fun for the girls….. Here at Ames we will

 Attend a Brownie meeting and complete an activity with them

 Ask a brownie scout some of the things she does as a Brownie

 Complete a Brownie Try it ( Brownie Badge)

 “ Bridge ” our Daisies into Brownies at a very special ceremony during our Year end awards.

Can your daughter be a Brownie without Bridging? Absolutely, we do not want to turn away any girls but only those girls who complete the Bridging program will earn the badge and participate in the “ Bridging ” portion of the ceremony. Once we know how many girls are participating, we will coordinate with the Ames current Brownie Troop and we will set up a schedule of events for the girls. Those Daisies who become Brownies next year will be part of a second troop that we will form. Please print out The attached form, fill in and send along with $8 to Joan Kanatas for participation/supplies (Checks may be made payable to Troop #41184) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - I _______________________________give my daughter______________________________ permission to participate in the Bridging to Brownies Activities. ______________________________Parents signature

Earth Hour 2009

http://www.earthhourus.org/chicago/chicago.php

Please read about this National event with your Daisy and sign up at the above link, have your Daisy activly participate in this national program and she can earn a special conservation patch for participating....

Just call /email me after you have participated!

Join millions of people around the world and turn off your lights in a unified call for action to combat climate change on Saturday, March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.

Earth Hour ChicagoEarth Hour is a global effort to encourage every individual, business, and community to turn out the lights for one hour to show that by working together, everyone can make a difference in the fight against climate change.

In Chicago and the surrounding area, Earth Hour 2009 is presented by ComEd, and is a partnership of the World Wildlife Fund, ComEd, the City of Chicago, and Leo Burnett.

Last year, more than 2.7 million people in the region turned off their lights for Earth Hour 2008. ComEd reported electricity savings of 7 percent or 818-megawatt hours – the carbon emissions equivalent of:

  • 1.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide
  • 72,000 gallons of gasoline consumed
  • Taking more than 1 million cars off the road for one hour
  • Planting 158 acres of trees

ComEd’s support of Earth Hour contributes to the company’s robust portfolio of energy efficiency and environmental programs. Earth Hour is also a component of Exelon 2020, an aggressive effort by ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, to reduce, offset, or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020.

While the core message of the 2009 campaign remains the same – to turn off the lights for one hour – long-term changes are needed. Learn simple tips for everyday energy savings.

Daisy Information 02/21/09

Dear Parents,

What can I say…we have a great group of girls…and a great group of parents, family and friends. I was so pleased at the turn out to our very first Investiture Ceremony.  You can be proud in the fact that participating in events such as these shows your daughter that what she accomplishes in life ( even in Kindergarten and first grade) is important to you too and that will help her become a strong independent girl. (I know I’m not ready for this either but I know it is inevitable, heck I barely made it through the pinning and  21 of the girls we not even my own child!)

I hope that you and your Daisy enjoyed the evening. So nice to see siblings as well as grandparents. Most of all I hope that each of your Daisies had a wonderful night honoring her accomplishments. I know I did.

I don’t know how I let this slip threw the cracks Friday but I did not get a chance to express my sincerest Thanks to Lisa Hennelly and her wonderful crew of helper moms/dads.  Not only did she make our vision come to life, she exceeded what we imagined! Knowing that the reception part of the evening was well taken care of, allowed each of us leaders the opportunity to enjoy the evening with our daughters as well.  So please when you see Lisa give her a hearty Girl Scout thumbs up because she really earned it! Thank you also to all the moms and dads who stayed afterwards to get the school back to order! This is what makes our troop work so well!

Patches:Daisy is the only patch to be ironed on in the front beside the American flag if you have it. All fun patches go on the back side of tunic.

1st grade Daisies who are Bridging to Brownies: March 9th /3;15 p.m. Multipurpose room, we have been invited to attend a Brownie meeting with the Ames Brownies.  As part of the bridging process this is one of the steps so please mark your calendars for this event. I will attend with the girls. Please pick up your Daisy following the meeting.  As of the this moment I do not have the finishing time, but will get that to you as soon as I find out. Please have your 1st grade Daisy in uniform. Kindergarten Daisies will not attend this function as they wont be bridging till next year.

NEXT MEETINGS:Our next meetings are March 6th and 13th. They are back to back Fridays due to the Spring Break.  We are focusing on the Respect for Authority Petals.  I have a call into the NR Fire Station to arrange a field trip on the 13th. I will send out notice as soon as the plans are finalized.  Parents will be responsible to making arrangements to transport their Daisies to and from the station. Parents do not need to stay for the visit.

Cookie Sales:We will have extra cookies, due to some unforeseen events our troop will have a limited number of boxes ( variety/quantity will be available on Monday 23rd) First come first serve. $4 per box due when picking up.  On a similar note, if you have boxes of cookies that are not deliverable or customer has changed their mind, please contact us we can sell them so that you are not footing the bill for the cookies.

WEBSITE:As part of our effort to remain Green, we are a paperless troop as much as we can be. Please check the website  http://amesdaisies.blogspot.com/    I will continue to post my emails, especially if you are not receiving them due to spam filters.  You may have to scroll to find the information or use the search box in the upper left corner.  Type the word you are looking for  EX: INVESTITURE  and click the SEARCH BLOG button immediately to the right. The post with the word will appear and you can scroll through them narrowing down your search to a few possible posts.  To view all the posts again there will be a grey box just under the title saying Showing posts for query her. Show all posts  Click the Show All Posts button.

CAMPING Dads who wish to join their Daisy on the overnight camping trip please advice me as we will need to make separate sleeping arrangement for you after lights out. I have already heard of one Dad who will be braving it with all the ladies, any other takers? Please notify me by March 6th if you believe a Daisy Dad will be attending.

And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Great American Backyard Bird Count February 13-16th

1. Plan to count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, February 13–16, 2009. You can count for longer than that if you wish! Count birds in as many places and on as many days as you like—one day, two days, or all four days. Submit a separate checklist for each new day. You can also submit more than one checklist per day if you count in other locations on that day.

2. Count the greatest number of individuals of each species that you see together at any one time. You may find it helpful to print out your regional bird checklist to get an idea of the kinds of birds you're likely to see in your area in February. You could take note of the highest number or each species you see on this checklist.

3. When you're finished, enter your results through their  web page. You'll see a button marked "Enter Your Checklists!" on the website home page beginning on the first day of the count (February 13, 2009). It will remain active until the deadline for data submission on March 1, 2009

4. Please email  Wendy after submitting your results. Those who participate will earn a bird watching patch at the June 5th awards ceremony. I must know by February 18th as we are participating in this with the Boy Scouts as well.  Those who do not report their results will not qualify for the patch.
